Radiography and ultrasound examination are available both on the yard and in the clinic. We have a range of brand new, state of the art equipment to be able to provide the highest standard of images. Images are interpreted by our expert veterinary surgeons, permanently digitally stored and can be sent digitally to owners, breeders, buyers or other veterinary surgeons.
Radiography
Radiography is most useful for investigations into bones, joints, heads or dental issues. We have new equipment providing excellent image quality and also have multiple clinic based and yard accessible units to fit all needs. Our experienced veterinary surgeons can provide advice for targeted radiographic examinations as well as accurate image interpretation. Radiographs may be taken in the case of pre-purchase examination, lameness investigation, poor performance examination, medical or surgical interventions and dental examinations. Radiography of the following may be possible:
- All limbs, joints and long bones
- Feet and farrier shots
- Back
- Neck
- Head
- Teeth
- Chest
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is most useful in identifying soft tissue issues and pathologies. This may have many applications; musculoskeletal/orthopedic/sports injuries, tendon/ligament damage, medical investigations including the abdomen and chest or reproductive ultrasound. Ultrasound can be performed in clinic or on the yard and is quick, straight forward and pain free for the horse and can be useful in achieving accurate diagnosis in a broad range of cases. We have brand new and top of the line equipment as well as highly experienced veterinary surgeons to provide the highest level ultrasonographic examinations and interpretations.
MRI/CT
At Troytown we are very excited to announce that we have the first standing MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computed Tomography) units in Ireland. These are advanced imaging devices which provide the technology to go above and beyond what x-ray and ultrasound can provide in terms of detail and resolution and are especially useful in identifying and fully elucidating issues that have been isolated to the foot, which is especially important in sports and leisure horses. It is also useful in fully assessing lameness associated with the fetlocks particularly in sports and racehorses, pasterns, suspensory ligament, carpus (knee) and hock regions. MRI and CT are performed under standing sedation, and our experienced team of technicians have decades of experience in acquiring the highest quality of images. We recommend you contact us for advice on the most applicate imaging modality for your horse, and to avail of these services particularly for any lameness issues of the distal limb.
Bone Scan (Nuclear Scintigraphy)
Bone scan is another advanced imaging modality in which Troytown has been an industry lead, also having the first unit ever installed in Ireland, we can provide decades of experience in image acquisition and image interpretation. Bone scan is particularly useful as a whole body or single limb screening investigation particularly into skeletal, bone or joint abnormalities. This may be especially useful in large body parts where x-ray and ultrasound examinations may be limited, early in disease processes before pathology is evident, in thoroughbred racehorses prone to stress injuries or occult bone fractures, infection, inflammation or in cases with mult-ilimb/complicated/or severe lameness. Please contact us to discuss the suitability of this imaging modality for your horse, or how it can be incorporated into a fully comprehensive lameness investigation.
